As compared to metals, plastics, being non-metallic, are completely protected from corrosion. There is no risk of aerobic, galvanic (electrochemical), pitting and inter-granular corrosion mechanisms. But when it comes to load applications like tanks and vessels, plastics alone do not have the ability to sustain as these are low in strength and their modulus property becomes more prominent at high temperatures (above 60 degrees). Hence, for a solution, the technology of reinforcing plastics with high strength fibres came into existence. In the journey, FRP evolved, made by reinforcing plastics with stiff and strong glass fibres. Today, known as new generation construction material, this FRP material is gaining immense popularity in chemical process plant equipments.
When designed, fabricated and installated accurately in a structure in accordance with a specific application, fibreglass material can resist a wide range of chemicals and temperatures.
For various specific corrosion conditions, there are available several resin systems. Glass fibre is available in the form of woven roving, chopped strand mat, roving and surface veils. For manufacturing chemical plant equipments, one of the most preferred fabrication methods is hand layup and also filament winding is used for those applications that require additional load bearing strength. Today, widely used are dual laminates that are generally thermoplastic chemical barrier lining bonded to FRP structure. It basically combines the moderate mechanical properties of FRP with advantage of chemical resistance in thermoplastics.
Composites, particularly glass reinforced plastics are highly corrosion resistant, moderate in strength and easy to fabricate that make this material suitable for process plant applications. As compared to production cost of traditional materials, e.g. stainless steel and rubber-lined steels, the installed cost of GRP plant is much more competitive and it also produces large and complex GRP components.
